6 POWERTRAIN REVOLUTION
Safe charging
As with any other aspect of the powertrain, TE puts a premium on safety when it comes to charging cables.
Our Mode 2 charger cables are engineered to exacting specification to deliver a safe and reliable supply of
energy each and every time a customer recharges their vehicle.
Some key features of our charging systems include:
• Ground monitoring. The system detects residual currents to avoid electrical shock.
• Mis-wiring detection. The system watches for any charger installation problem and acts
accordingly to confirm customer safety.
• Over- and undervoltage. The unit looks for grid instability and prevents it from influencing
the charging process.
• Overcurrent. The system protects against short circuits.
• Relay diagnostics. The unit recognizes missed connections, welded contacts, open contacts,
any mechanical breakage or even an increase in contact resistance.
• Overheating protection. TE's system provides the possibility to monitor the temperature in the
ICCB box as well as on the infrastructure plug. This confirms the safety of a complete charge.
Contactors for any environment
Our customers usually come to us with a specific problem or challenge that they need to solve in the
connectivity of hybrid or electric battery systems. One of the connectivity issues we see in lithium-ion
batteries is putting many of these cells together in a very harsh automotive environment. TE is actively
working on solving these critical challenges in teaming with industry leaders to develop integrated solutions
that enable new technologies and bring new levels of efficiency and performance to existing technologies.
Smart connector systems
TE's broad connector portfolio helps enable our customers to flourish in the fast changing e-mobility market
while continuing the industry momentum to electrify the powertrain.
Our smart connector systems are designed to perform in high voltage environments where
safety is a top concern. Some key areas of focus for our smart connector systems include:
• Shielding. To avoid interference on the data and power connection system in the car.
• Safety. TE's touch-safe technology helps protect the user handling high voltage connectors.
TE connectors are designed so users cannot touch current-carrying elements with their fingers.
• Creepage and clearance distances. Increased distances between conductive materials leads
to higher possible voltage levels. TE engineers have designed systems that help enable the highest
possible voltage levels while allowing for minimum packaging.
An example of a product with the features mentioned
above is TE's current line of HV AMP+ terminal and
connector systems. This line includes the AMP+ HVA
280 family, designed for auxiliary applications, and
the AMP+ HVP 1100, designed for new generation
batteries made for fast charging applications.
