mouser.com/te 11 LED Street Lighting for Specific Street Scenarios Every street plan and organization deploying streetlights has different requirements. Some requirements in metropolitan areas are typically efficiency, aesthetics, light quality, and maintenance/ OpEx considerations. In Metropolitan areas, the streetlights may be more closely spaced and use more compact light units to provide better light coverage in the narrow confines of busy streets. Most metropolitan areas don't have wildlife concerns outside of the certain park or preserve areas. The main problems driving urban street lighting are safety, economics, and aesthetics. Hence, LEDs for metropolitan areas may not need to be as high- powered, and warmer LED color temperatures are likely preferred. While some suburban street lighting scenarios may use larger and broader spaced units with much more comprehensive coverage, efficiency and light quality are still vital. Some suburban, especially rural, street lighting installations may have the same coverage concerns but also may have more significant environmental concerns about how light quality and artificial light sources may impact local wildlife. This may require important development FIGURE 3: LUXEON M LEDs were chosen for the lighting in el TĂșnel de la Vila OlĂmpica to deliver high light output, reliability, and efficiency. (Image Credit: Lumileds) to ensure that the lighting design and quality are a desirable color temperature and quality to best fit the exact species of local wildlife while maintaining high visibility for street traffic and pedestrians. For larger light installations where the cost and equipment required to repair/replace these units is much higher than with smaller and generally more accessible streetlights typically found in metropolitan areas, LED driver and light source reliability is critical. This is also true for tunnels and narrow roadways along canyon walls, where servicing light systems may require specialized equipment/personnel and may be dangerous (Figure 3). Hence, long-life and highly reliably LED solutions are key here. The color temperature for lighting in these scenarios may be cooler, for enhanced visibility for drivers, than that used near pedestrian walkways.
