mouser.com/te 23 An understanding of the way the various elements that go into a modern streetlight operate and function in harmony can be gleaned by looking at the ANSI C136.41 industry standard. The critical components in the figure below (Figure 2) are: • Control Device housed within a dome to protect the electronics from the elements while supporting efficient ambient light measurement, environmental measurements, and wireless communications signals. • Photodiode to measure ambient light • Wireless Communications to transfer data to/ from the cloud • Electronically controlled switch from the line voltage to the LED driver • Power Supply Unit • ANSI C136.10 Interface Base • Dimming Signal • LED Driver • LED Module Conclusion Converting traditional streetlights to LED-based lighting arrays is the definition of a "no-brainer." It will reduce cost, require less maintenance and, most importantly, be far better for the environment over time. The improved functionality and reliability of LED lighting will also make streets and public spaces safer. Reduced power consumption and a smaller carbon footprint make LED lighting the most environmentally friendly option for retrofitting streetlights and other outdoor light sources—and it's only a matter of time before that transition begins on a worldwide scale. ■ This standard system configuration supports smart connectivity and various control and adjustability features. Another industry standard, Zhaga Book 18, adds a second controller and housing below the upper node to support downward pointing sensors such as motion sensing or ground conditions. For LED lighting systems, TE Connectivity supplies ANSI C 136.41 compliant dimming receptacles and Lumawise Endurance S Series Zhaga Book 18 compliant receptacles, and Lumawise Endurance N Series ANSI C136.41 and Zhaga Book 18 compliant bases and domes. These elements protect the electronics from harsh conditions while still supporting smart systems' sensing and communications requirements. Wiring connectors for the light engine and the driver also need reliability and long life, even amid challenging environmental conditions. TE Connectivity has low profile light engine interconnects for space-constrained applications in surface mount, side latch, through-hole board mount, panel mount, and free-hanging configurations. TE Connectivity has optimized terminal blocks for wire-to-wire, and wire-to-board connections for driver interconnects. These interconnect solutions simplify installation time, reduce cost and lengthen product lifetimes.
